Age Alone Doesn't Determine What a Vehicle Is Worth
Our 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 wasn't the newest truck on the road, but it was one we knew inside and out. It was dependable, well cared for, and had years of life left in it. When it was declared a total loss, we weren't looking to make money, we just wanted enough to replace what we had.
Liberty Mutual's initial offer was $15,487.
The number caught us off guard. We started looking for similar Dodge Ram 2500s and quickly realized we couldn't replace our truck for anything close to what we had been offered. Trucks like ours are hard to find, especially when they've been maintained over the years.
We didn't think the offer reflected the true market value of our vehicle, so we reached out to a public adjuster. They reviewed the valuation, agreed that our truck had been undervalued, and explained that our policy included a Right to Appraisal.
Knowing there was an independent process available gave us confidence to move forward. Instead of simply accepting the insurance company's valuation, we were able to have the dispute decided through appraisal.
The appraisal process concluded with a final settlement of $21,000.
For us, that meant having the financial ability to replace the truck we had lost instead of settling for something less because the insurance company's first offer wasn't enough.
Without the Right to Appraisal, we would have been responsible for absorbing that shortfall ourselves. We would have been left trying to replace a dependable truck with thousands of dollars less than what it was actually worth.
This experience reminded us that older vehicles still have real value, especially when they've been properly maintained. Age alone doesn't determine what a vehicle is worth.
The Right to Appraisal gave us peace of mind because we knew our claim would ultimately be decided through an independent process, not just by the insurance company's initial valuation. We hope more drivers learn about this important protection before they ever need it, because when you've lost a vehicle that you depend on, knowing your rights can make all the difference.
